THE CANCER HOUSES

An important weapon against child cancer in many countries, specially Brazil and other south American locations  are the so called CANCER HOUSES. They are a mix of a small hostel, almost a second home,   with specialized care takers who host, feed  and look after children who are undergoing hospital treatment.

This initiative became so successful and popular in Brazil that it is acknowledged that the cancer cure rate increased considerably, up to 50%  in some cases,  due to their existence. It is also  admitted that a hospital could not do without them , anymore, nowadays.

 

 

 

THE CANCER HOUSE SCOPE

The cancer treatment normally takes very very long. A cure cannot be announced completely before at least 5 to 7 years from the tumor extraction.

Most children with cancer are very poor in the developing countries and do not have enough means of supporting the hard and long treatment period. Many of the patients also live in distant areas, very remotely from the big centre´s treatment sources.

Due to a recent Brazilian law , called “ TFD” or treatment away from the domicile , those children can travel and treat their cancer at a hospital in a big city.  The stay at the hospital however is short, and children are granted leave right after the surgeries.
That is where the Cancer Houses play a very important role, for they host the children and one parent near the hospital , with food, medicine,  special care and transportation to the several chemotherapy sessions that initiate after the surgery period.
Some children can stay up to several years hosted at the Cancer House. And ALL OF THAT SERVICE IS PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE  to the children and their parents, including food  and all other elements.

Before the cancer houses , many children would not even come to the hospital, for they did not have where to stay.

Those who found the courage to come normally abandoned the treatment after a couple of chemotherapy sessions, leaving the disease uncured.
